Someone probably just spent a couple hundred gold at an Altar of Darkness to bring Balnazaar back to life. WC3 joke there...
Seriously though, I'm pretty sure that Varimathras said that it was forbidden for a Dreadlord to kill another Dreadlord. That may be true, but it could also have been a lie. Dreadlords are the ultimate manipulators and schemers. No doubt Varimathras had dozens of plans to fall back on if things failed like they did.
He now claims that his allegiance is to the Forsaken, but he's probably just using them to suit his purposes. Balnazaar created the Scarlet Crusade, and they're fighting the Scourge. Varimathras is aiding the Forsaken, and THEY'RE fighting the Scourge. Clearly the dreadlords are still working to eliminate one of the biggest obstacles to the Legion's eventual conquest of Azeroth, in their own special way.
In a way, Varimathras and Sylvanas represent the two sides of Forsaken culture; Varimathras represents the side that wants to perfect the plague of undeath and set it upon the world, and Sylvanas represents the side that just wants to un-live in peace and work towards finding a cure for their undeath.

I'd like to see the following done for KYL:
Zul'jin
Sargeras (probably the most important character in the game)
Ner'zhul
Kil'jaeden
