My best guess as to how this is going to work?
You get a quest at level 80 to do "something." It's not really important what the quest is for but the idea is that it's quite hard and you end up corrupting part of your soul and then leaving it behind somewhere... somewhere bad.
Your character then escapes, leaving your own soul intact but your corrupted self behind.
You are then able to create a new character of the Death Knight class. You start out in that nasty place as a weaker version of yourself (level 60 maybe) with marginal gear and must quest in this new area (possibly your mind/dream state) to free yourself from the Lich King.
Upon freeing yourself you are able to rejoin your faction but the questline to actually do this is tough and until then you are hated by both factions and most of the mobs (save a few quest givers).
