I thought Sargeras got squished when the portal collapsed. He got impatient (and rather angry, with a Cenarius blessed wooden axe weilded by an orc in his foot) and tried to pass through when it destabilized...effectively destroying him bodily. Which may explain the whole Medivh thing. Not having a body, he posesses or creates an avatar which he battles Medivh's mother, purposfully loses, and we know the rest.

I think that's right, but I'm not sure.
