This always struck me as kind of a plot hole in the lore. The stuff drives men insane, but we players get to fish up endless quantities of it from the ground and cover ourselves in it from head to toe?

You do see something to that effect with Shadowmourne. Much like the Pre-BC ashbringer, you hear whispers from 'An Unknown Voice', presumably the Lich King himself. With great power...

...comes even greater corruption.
