Sunday Morning Funnies: Time to update the guide

Sunday Morning Funnies Well, gee SUN
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

It is time to update the SMF guide! Rather than destroy the old one (it has historical value), I will create a new one in 2013 (the deadlines will be after the holidays, don't worry). If you are a comic artist for a WoW-related web comic that updates regularly and would like to submit artwork and some information for the blurb, please contact me (indicating that it is for me or SMF in the subject line) and I will be in touch and we'll discuss details.

And now, for the comics:

The best of WoW Insider: March 2012

The best of WoW Insider March 2012

Ellyndia: Whenever I need to do something that might be scary or a little intimidating, I take a deep breath, close my eyes, and say to myself: "Time's up, let's do this." I have gotten a job using this method.
jazz.panther: My success with that method is only about 33.33% ... repeating of course.

Mass Effect 3 was released on the 6th, which was just enough time for people to finish it and be really pissed off in time for the Mists of Pandaria beta, which hit on the 21st. Not surprisingly, beta coverage absolutely dominated everything else we did in this month. Rather than overload readers with an endless parade of it, I've tried to centralize our MoP coverage in our omnibus guide.

The best of WoW Insider February 2012

Matt Rossi: I'm starting to think Neltharion was the tank for the dragon aspects' regular 5-man group.

After a few times around the block, the general "feel" of months like February 2012 becomes pretty familiar. The combination of aging raid content, an approaching expansion, and a lot of stuff going on with the business end of WoW combined for several weeks' worth of commentary on the meta-game and what was going on with Blizzard HQ. This was a month with a lot of interesting news, and it also turned out to be a fabulous time for Moviewatch and the arts scene.

The best of WoW Insider: January 2012

The best of WoW Insider January 2012

Marthazon: World of Warcraft is sort of like the French Foreign Legion of games when it comes to age. As long as you can do your part, it's rare for someone to ask "How old are you?"

For anyone out there who's new to the site, at the end of every year we run a retrospective series examining the last 12 months and the articles that best captured the zeitgeist of the player community. You'll find one of these published every day through the end of 2012, assuming we don't all vanish into the nether on Dec. 21 (which I am inclined to doubt, as bills are due and nobody's that lucky).

2012 felt like a very introspective year for the game. Between the lack of a 2012 BlizzCon, Cataclysm's winding down, and the 9-month wait for Mists of Pandaria, players used the extra time to argue and probe into systems that most needed improvement. January was no exception, and this was a very chatty month for our staffers.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Mister Fancy Pants

Sunday Morning Funnies SUN
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Well, Sara & Kleeyo comes to an end this week. There's an excellent final comic as well as a send-off note and plenty of comments worthy of being read. Check it out!

While we say goodbye to a two-year-long favorite, we are also welcoming a new comic to the list this week, Gratz. You can read more about the artist on his About page; he has been making these for a couple of years now but only recently started publishing them online. So, there are quite a few to start with!

I also dug up some comics that have been updating sparsely or went on a hiatus and have listed some updates you might not know about.

Finally, don't forget about the Charlie Brown-themed wallpaper available from The Daily Blink for any donation amount. It's pretty cool!

Where is my mahjong minigame in Mists of Pandaria?

Why doesn't Mists of Pandaria have a Mahjong mini game
During Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard gave us the Peggle and Bejeweled addons. In Cataclysm, we got an amazing in-game version of Plants vs. Zombies (which rewarded a Singing Sunflower pet that actually sang). Now in Mists of Pandaria, the latest addition to the growing collection of games within the game is the new pet battle system which is reminiscent of the beloved Pokémon series.

Well, beloved to everyone else anyway. See, Pokémon and I have a bitter past. It started when I was 12, and I told my mother the only thing I wanted for Christmas was a Gameboy and a copy of Pokémon Blue. It was an expensive gift to ask for from a single parent working two jobs, but I was desperate. In the months prior, all my friends at school had ceased socializing about comics and fantasy novels in favor of playing Pokémon. Every day at lunch they'd scarf down their meals then whip out their link cables and start dueling. Not having a Gameboy myself though, I was completely left out.

Sadly, when Christmas came there was no Gameboy. Instead I received a Pocket Pikachu, which was a weird toy pedometer crossed with a Tamagotchi. The idea was that you'd keep it in your pocket and as you took steps you'd earn currency to buy presents for Pikachu, who would then be your friend. The problem was the pedometer wasn't very sensitive to normal steps, so you were better off shaking it over and over. So for the next few months, while my friends continued to ignore me to play Pokémon, I shook a stupid, yellow pedometer up and down.

Anyway, long story short, I'm not too crazy about a pet battle system. And while I appreciate that Blizzard has made great efforts to integrate such an indepth feature into the game, I feel like they've missed out on the perfect opportunity to add a minigame to the game that would fit perfectly into Mists of Pandaria: mahjong.

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

This week's list features Charlie Brown-inspired comics and lots of turkeys, in addition to the usual, of course (you know; goodbyes, puns, patch stuff, mayhem, bikinis, snarkiness, dragon landing). And, because I've been missing them, there's a whole host of comics from The Daily Blink to keep you busy all morning long!

As always, if you know of a comic that should be featured here (something new or one that has recently begun updating again, for example), drop a link into the comments section!

This week, Sara & Kleeyo surpassed 500,000 visitors. Congrats! But there are only 3 more comics to go. I'm really going to miss it!

This week's list features bunny slippers, big reveals, lingerie, clown shoes, and even a pony! Weirdly, not a lot of turkey.

Also: I learned that I want a purse dragon. You?

And happy one year anniversary, From Draenor With Love!

But what's on the list this week, you ask? Marriage plans! Some swearing! Head on a pike!

And a dude who volunteers to "shackle the ghost," which sounds a bit more like a giggle-worthy euphemism than a heroic ability, no?

Sunday Morning Funnies: Kite them

Sunday Morning Funnies Kite them SUN
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

This week's list boasts some pretty serious fight scenes, exposition, and humor. There's a refusal, possession, some good ol' fashioned dismemberment, lots of blood and swords and stuff. Your post-Halloween gore!

But it's not all so messy. There's a kite! A hug! Flower-sniffin'! A villager on fi... well okay, that is more in line with the gore. This week is just a little heavy on that, and light on the kittens and pandas (it happens). But you're gonna love it.

This week's list won't disappoint! It's got exploding squirrels, naked achievement-seekers (totally SFW though, fortunately), family drama, death and renewal, revenge, some handy-dandy exposition, and the beginning of what might be a pretty epic battle.

Don't forget to leave comic-related tips in the comments section!

Sunday Morning Funnies: I am a pointy squirrel

Sunday Morning Funnies I am a pointy squirrel SUN
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Happy mid-October, people! It's Stop and Smell the Roses Week, aka an opportunity to share something you appreciate about WoW-comics. You know, the little things we don't often think about. Or maybe the obvious things that are fun to discuss anyway. And this is totally official by the way -- I made sure of that, when I made this up, just now.

So here is mine, and it's something I've thought a little bit about the last couple weeks: I love that various comics will do long story arcs using different periods in WoW lore and/or gameplay (expansion packs). It really rounds out the reading experience. I love the super-current jokes too, but if every comic was always doing the most current thing, we would miss out on the chance to revisit the Lich King or the Outlands and see them with new eyes, when we're not quite so sick of it all.

My other, more obvious, more comedy-relevant comment would be that (of course) I love the random one-liners (one-panels?) that make me laugh unexpectedly. "I am a pointy squirrel," indeed!

What are some of the little things you appreciate about all the WoW comics?

Sunday Morning Funnies: Filial sorrow

Sunday Morning Funnies Filial sorrow SUN
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Gangnam style (no, really). Tulips! A bunny eared staff! Gardening; sowing the seeds of carrots, flowers, friendship. And, well, pandas. I'm not sure we'll ever not have pandas again.

Oh. And the usual (murder, bra tops, a raucous game of "drag-the-kitty-corpse-through-the-snow") - all that stuff that is probably safe for work and small children.

Plus: A few comics that we'd fallen behind on have been added below. Drop a tip into the comments section if you know of any new ones, any one-shot WoW-related comics from a generally non-WoW-related series, or any that have started updating again that aren't listed here!
